Higher Education

Our research on employment revealed that issues affecting employment trajectories often begin in schools and Higher Education (HE), which is why it is important to ensure reasonable adjustments or accommodations for students to allow inclusion in education. The 2006 United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is applicable to students who have a medical conditions, like sickle cell and thalassaemia. In the CRPD, Article 24 affirms the rights of persons with disabilities, chronic illnesses and medical conditions to education. All states must ensure non-discrimination and equality of opportunity and inclusion in education and life-long learning. It is up to the authorities in higher education institutions, inclusive of tertiary or post-secondary educational institutions such as vocational settings, colleges and universities, to ensure this inclusion.
